WHY WISDOM IS MORE VALUABLE THAN GOLD

Proverbs 3:13-15 (ESV)
13  Blessed is the one who finds wisdom, and the one who gets understanding, 14  for the gain from her is better than gain from silver and her profit better than gold. 15  She is more precious than jewels, and nothing you desire can compare with her.

God tells us of the supremacy of Wisdom over and over again in Proverbs. Apparently to Him there is nothing more important, because He has made the pursuit of Wisdom to be our Number One lesson.

One reason for Wisdom’s supremacy is because it starts with the knowledge of God, so without wisdom we will never know or experience our great God and Savior. And a life without an awareness of God is a life that is empty, futile, hopeless, and without purpose.

Remember the theme and point of the entire book from chapter one:

Proverbs 1:7 (ESV)
7  The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.

There is another reason why Wisdom is better than gold, silver, jewels, long life, honor, peace, happiness, and safety all combined (vs. 13-26).

Wisdom is the “root” and all the rest are the “fruit”. Wisdom is the cause, and the rest is effect. Sow Wisdom, and you’ll reap a harvest of all the blessings listed.

Consider money (and don’t we always?); Would you rather have a large sum of money fall into your lap out of nowhere, or would you rather know how to make a large sum of money?

If you have money without wisdom, you won’t have money for long. Here’s an old English proverb; “A fool and his money are soon parted”. It is human nature to blow through money and live paycheck to paycheck (six out of ten Americans can’t cover a $1000 emergency need).

If, on the other hand you have wisdom to earn, make, save, and budget your money, then when financial need strikes—and it will—you will be able to replace lost funds because you are financially wise.

But wisdom extends far beyond finances. Wisdom protects the good, prevents the bad, replaces the loss, and builds the better in all areas of life.

What happens if you are foolish in your marriage, raising your children, eating right and exercising, dealing with neighbors, and taking care of your equipment?

What if you are foolish in your relationship with the Almighty?

To remove wisdom is to remove the foundation from a building, or to cut the roots off a tree, or to replace seeds with gravel. It is robbing yourself and those whom you care about of the very source of endless blessing in life.

But to live by the wisdom of God is the fountain of every blessing; it begins with knowing the LORD, and reaches into every aspect of your life, and into eternity.

After all, Wisdom is the essence of the very heart of God.

So let the Lady Wisdom, Solomon’s Tutor, personification of the mind and heart of God, be your Teacher as well, and be the means to every good end.
