Journey Through the Cross
40 Days of Devotions on the Greatest Event of All Time
Day 5: Guardian
You were the anointed cherub who covers; I established you; you were on the holy mountain of God; you walked back and forth in the midst of fiery stones. You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created, till iniquity was found in you. Ezekiel 28:14-15
Glory of God, consuming and unapproachable fire of infinite majesty dwelt atop the celestial mountain of holiness. Even in the realm of God’s Heaven of heavens where everything is holy, the Mountain was set apart as holier still. And holiest of all was the Seat of God where the One dwelt and ruled, the Holiest of holies, the innermost sanctuary of the Almighty.
The mountain, as befitting the pedestal of the Throne was also ablaze. Made from the most glorious stones, it was layered with crystal gold and enormous gems of every description. Heaven’s idea of perfect gemstones: ruby, topaz, diamond, jasper, sapphire, turquoise, emerald and more, were the very substance of the mountain.
Filled and consumed with the fire of God’s glory, covered with fiery jewels, the mountain rose from the heavenscape with a brightness and splendor that would shame the noonday sun, and sent waves of glory and beauty pulsating from one end of the Celestial City to the other.
Above all and over all, the Holy Mountain declared and guarded the glory of God.
And so did the Guardian.
Mimshach, Covering Cherub, guarded and protected the Divine Glory with unequaled wisdom, strength, and beauty.
As the living spirit of the Holy Mountain he was covered in the same gold and gemstones, and the fire of God’s glory was a holocaust within him. Mimshach, “Anointed” for so his name means, was consumed in fire and dwelt in fire; he was holy fire.
The greatest and most beautiful of all God’s celestial creatures, it was his duty to walk among the stones of fire and guard the Holy Mountain. As the one who basked in the glory of God it was also his joy to worship his Creator. When he spread his enormous bejeweled wings his whole being shouted a song of ecstasy and adoration over the majesty of God.
As the greatest of the host of heaven, perfect in duty, in joy, and in holiness, he was the guardian of glory, the personal attendant and Gatekeeper of the Almighty.
No one approached God without Mimshach’s permission.
No one.
Fantastic creatures, Cherubim and Seraphim, even chief angels such as Michael and Gabriel were confronted and examined by the Guardian. Only by approval and permission of Mimshach were any allowed to approach the Presence of God atop the holy mountain.
Just as his glory, wisdom, and beauty were unequalled, so was his diligence in performing his duties. Since the moment of his creation, he had been the loyal, holy, ever-present guardian angel of God.
When God created the physical heaven and the earth, it was Mimshach who led the angels in a roaring song of joy over what He had wrought.
When God made man in His own image, planted a garden in Eden, furnished it with wondrous trees, and gave the newborn humans instruction, Mimshach was there, vigilant and attentive.
No one worked harder, conducted more business, wielded more influence, or had any kind of greatness above him.
No one.
And so the seed of an idea began to form in his heart, a principle that he saw all around him…
The greater rules over the lesser.
Perfectly logical, and just like God.
He considered himself and the other angelic beings. Were any of Heaven’s host as beautiful as Mimshach? Were any as powerful?
No?
Then let the lesser serve the greater, for that is God’s way.
So he began to look on his fellows with new eyes. They were clearly the lesser, and he was their better. Pride had its first existence in the heart of the mightiest of angels.
Enthralled with his own glory, he began inwardly to loathe all others: the lesser. Soon his heart was filled with malice toward them, and with it came a selfish greed and an unyielding desire to act on his newly formed thoughts.
With wisdom and power that were now greatly corrupted but not in the least diminished, he began to find ways to abuse his authority and treat his fellows shamefully.
With a murderous heart he discovered cruelty, founded extortion, and loved it. He invented lying and the language of lies, and became the original thief.
He found the exhilaration of tyranny to be addictive, and so he filled his existence with every malicious craving his incredible intellect could imagine. Until at last, as he had once been consumed with holy fire, he became consumed with sin.
So pervasive was his wickedness that the very stones of fire he walked upon were defiled.
The one who had been created to protect the holiness of God had become the very one to corrupt it.
Until…
